As a Propulsion Test Technician, you will play a crucial role in running propulsion systems in our state-of-the-art testbed environment. Your responsibilities will include set-up, test cell configuration, servicing, and running both automated and manual sequences. You will work on a variety of prototype units, from downsized engines focused on economy and emissions to high-output units with a performance focus. The Engineering team will provide support for your role.

Responsibilities: –

  • Adhere to all health, safety, and quality procedures to ensure a secure working environment.
  • Contribute to the installation and setup of instrumentation and test cell automation systems.
  • Validate basic engine running and associated fluid and boost conditioning systems in the test cell.
  • Collaborate as part of a team to fulfil customer test requirements for specific development programs.
  • Identify and diagnose mechanical and electrical unit faults, working with the Engineering team to develop effective solutions.
  • Perform servicing and hardware changes as necessary.
  • Run the test cell using a combination of automated test cycles and manual operation, progressing to more complex calibration tasks with the support of the Engineering and Calibration teams.
  • Conduct quality control checks and validate unit test data.
  • Take ownership of the unit, equipment, and hardware in the test cell.
  • Maintain effective communication with supporting staff, Engineers, Supervisors, and customers at a technical level.
  • Drive initiatives to reduce waste and optimise efficiency.

Qualifications: –

  • City and Guilds and/or Full Apprenticeship. Alternatively, ONC/HNC or similar in Automotive Engineering.

Core Competencies: –

  • Solid automotive background, preferably in a test cell environment (consideration will be given to candidates from other automotive disciplines).
  • Excellent understanding of engine fundamentals and related systems.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and instruction after completing the probationary period.
  • Willingness to take responsibility for your own work and provide support to others.
  • Strong teamwork ethics.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Respect for health and safety procedures and practices.
  • Professional attitude and excellent communication skills, even under pressure.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Advantageous Qualities: –

  • Experience in both gasoline and diesel testing, particularly in complex testing environments with various testing techniques and equipment (pressure and temperature instrumentation, emissions measurement, etc.).
  • Familiarity with AVL and ETAS test bed equipment and automation systems.
  • Proficiency in completing electrical wiring assemblies.
  • Experience with Lithium-Ion Batteries, preferably in the automotive industry.
  • Knowledge of electrical automotive high-voltage (up to 1000V DC) connectivity techniques.
  • Proficiency in test automation software (AVL PUMA and/or Horiba STARS), indicating software (AVL Indicom, ETAS INCA), and analysis software (AVL Concerto).
